You may ask what does cartography have to do with coding? Well, the answer is that nowadays there usually is an online equivalent to jobs we normally think of as being offline. In the case of cartography, digital mapping exists in the domain of "Geographic Information Systems" or GIS. I actually got into web development because I was first in GIS, then learning HTML, CSS, and JS became really important. From there I learned that building websites can be a lot of fun too!
When I started GIS school I didn't really consider myself computer-literate, but I did have a huge interest in math and also making pretty designs and I think both of those things work well for web development. And I'm very very thankful for all the indie web enthusiasts who post open source resources for people to learn <3
I actually didn't grow up exploring the web of the 2000s in the same way other Millenials have (I'm in my 30s), so I don't have the same nostalgia that many of my friends have. But I do have a lot of uh disdain for the hyper-optimized, exploitative, marketing-based web of today. I love that learning how to code websites has lead me to a community of folks that like websites just for fun.
Which brings me to neocities! What a cool group of people making cool things. It's so fun to browse and see what people come up with, to see the creativity, to see how people help each other :)
